River ecosystems may be considered as one of the most dynamic ecosystems in the world. These are also vulnerable to pollution due to natural and anthropogenic interference resulting in a lot of stress on the biota and river ecology, which is infected beyond their assimilation and regeneration capacity.
Rivers are essential for the country's economy because they are helpful for transportation and navigation, and they also produce hydroelectricity. We often say that India is a land of many rivers, as they are a crucial part of our culture and mythology. After all, most human civilizations were born along river valleys.
River Water & Wetlands
The water that flows in rivers is fresh, meaning that it contains less than one percent salt. However, rivers still carry and distribute important salts and nutrients to support plant and animal life. For this reason, some of the most biodiverse habitats on our planet can be found around rivers.
River related hazards includes flood, flash flood, bank erosion etc. are most common issues, causing either due to the natural or anthropogenic reasons and happens almost every year and poses lots of economic and social challenges. Through CRA we are looking forward to study, analyses and predict such kind of riverine hazards to support stakeholders in case of policy framing and decision making.
River Engineering is a branch of civil engineering dealing with the design and construction of various structures to improve and/or restore rivers for both human and environmental needs.Its scope, in the broad sense, may include river training, channel design, flood control, water supply, navigation improvement, hydraulic structure design, hazard mitigation and environmental enhancement.
River deltas are important in human civilization, as they are major agricultural production centers and population centers. They can provide coastline defense and can impact drinking water supply. They are also ecologically important, with different species' assemblages depending on their landscape position. On geologic timescales, they are also important carbon sinks
River Transportation is one of the most important means of transport for carrying goods from one part to another in a country. It is a cheaper and quicker mode of transport and is most suitable for carrying heavy, bulky and cheap traffic like coal, iron ore, etc. to distant places. Water transportation is the international movement of water over large distances. Methods of transportation fall into three categories: Aqueducts, which include pipelines, canals, tunnels and bridges. Container shipment, which includes transport by tank truck, tank car, and tank ship.
River health means the ability of a river ecosystem to support and maintain a balanced, integrated and adaptive community of organisms that resembles the natural habitat. It can be measured using set of indicators of environmental disturbance from the healthy state, relative to some benchmark or reference condition.
River informatics is the application of emerging technologies in case of the river sectors to understand the process, test hypotheses, and support decision making in water resources management. River related information and data bases are used for addressing environmental, physical, social, political, economic, and ecological issues of water supply, consumption, availability, and accessibility as well as river management.
River Policy & Governance
River governance relates to the enabling environment in which water management actions take place: that is, the overarching policies, strategies, plans, finances and incentive structures that concern or influence water resources; the relevant legal and regulatory frameworks and institutions; and planning, decision-making and monitoring processes. Effective water governance promotes responsible actions and measures to protect and ensure the sustainability of water resources and to optimize the services and benefits obtained from those resources.
