SAIARD's R7 Model

A Holistic Approach to Revitalizing Dying Rivers

Rivers are the arteries of our planet, sustaining life, ecosystems, and civilizations. However, many of the world’s rivers are in crisis, facing threats from pollution, over-extraction, climate change, and mismanagement. In response to these challenges, the South Asian Institute for Advanced Research and Development (SAIARD) has developed the R7 Model, a comprehensive framework designed by its Centre for River Affairs to rehabilitate and revitalize dying rivers globally. This model encapsulates seven interrelated principles: Rethink, Regenerate, Rejuvenate, Revamp, Recycling, Remodelling, and Reconnect.

The SAIARD R7 Model offers a holistic and comprehensive approach to addressing the global crisis of dying rivers. By rethinking our relationship with rivers, regenerating ecosystems, rejuvenating flows, revamping infrastructure, recycling water, remodelling management strategies, and reconnecting communities, the R7 Model provides a pathway to sustainable river management. As the world faces escalating environmental challenges, the R7 Model stands as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that with concerted effort and innovative thinking, we can restore and protect our vital river systems for the benefit of all.
